Embracing a Greener Future:

How Our Sustainable Practices Power Positive Change

by Tina Coker AIFD CFD AAF PFCI

At our business, sustainablility is not just a buzzword, it's a way of life.  We are committed to making a positive impact on the environment and reducing our carbon footprint.

One of the ways we achieve this is by using electric vehicles for our delivery service.  By opting for electric vehicles, we are significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting clean transportation for our flower bouquets.

But that's not all:

  • We go the extra mile by recycling vases to minimize waste.  Instead of throwing them away, we clean and reuse them for future floral arrangements.  This not only reduces landfill waste but also saves resources that would have been used in producing new vases.
  • We are taking steps to reduce plastics in our operations.  Our bamboo card picks are a great example of this commitment.  These eco-friendly alternatives to traditional plastic card picks are biodegradable, ensuring that we minimize our impact on the environment.
  • We believe in using every resource efficiently.  That's why we mulch our stems to create landscape mulching and composting material.  The natural mulch helps retain moisture in the soil, suppresses weed growth and promotes healthy plant growth without relying on synthetic chemicals.

By incorporating these sustainable practices into our business operations, we strive to make a difference and inspire others to do the same.  Who said being eco-friendly couldn't be fun?

Experience Matters

Experience Matters

Floral Football by Erin & Amy at Designs of the Times Florist

My husband says it’s exhausting to watch college football with me.  I’m enthusiastic and hang on every play from the moment the first whistle is blown.  Sometimes covering my eyes too stressed to watch the next game changing play and always on the edge of my seat for every field goal attempt.   This year with the reduction of college games due to Covid I’ve started watching professional football.  Although I grew up watching the Green bay packers with my brothers, I’m a Florida native who roots for Tampa Bay….Go Bucs!

The new quarter back for our Buccaneers, Tom Brady, is amazing to watch.  A 20 year veteran of the NFL, he has a wealth of experience and finesse on the field.  By no means am I an expert on football.  I am barely a step above liking a team because their uniforms are pretty.  But last week while watching the game against the Detroit Lions, Brady did something that peaked my curiosity.  The center calls the protection on every play, but on one play Brady saw something different than the center and changed the protection.  A six-time super bowl quarter back, who I’m sure has been sacked enough times to recognize the opposing team’s blitz, Brady adjusted the line.   No disrespect to the center’s call, but in some cases the amount of experience a person has leads to a far better outcome.

2021 rings in my 39th anniversary of opening this retail flower shop. For 25 of those 39 years, I traveled all over the world teaching floral designers every aspect of floral artistry and practical flower shop operation.  Those years of teaching gave me the opportunity to illustrate multiple mechanics for any given design style.  Whether I’m designing for the Rose Bowl parade, Presidential inaugurals, or a bumble bee birthday celebration for a 1 year old, every event has its unique challenge.  I love a Challenge.  It’s like going for it on a 4th down!  Recognizing and overcoming challenges takes experience and the ability to see a possible blitz.  In my estimation whether its football or flowers…Experience Matters for the best outcome.

Something Blue

Something Blue

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed....Something Blue

Color is the first thing that grabs you!  Doesn’t matter whether it’s a car, t-shirt or flowers, you will gravitate to color that speaks to your soul.  Everyone seems to have a favorite and your color choice can speak volumes about your personality and mood.  After all color affects everything from hunger (red), calming anxiety (green) or adding joy(orange).   Pure hues and their undertones are reflective of world events and economies.  If colors tend towards more muted and is tempered with brown then the economy is struggling.  If colors are more vibrant with green and yellow undertones, then business is booming.

What’s the current color that’s trending?  With all the present chaos, the one hue that has become a prominent request is the color that exudes calm and reliability… BLUE!

COVID has changed the wedding landscape.  We are still designing beautiful flowers for intimate wedding ceremonies.  This last weekend we had numerous celebrations and although blush pinks, peaches and neutrals are a prominent palette there was a shift to all shades of blue.  The color of tranquility and peace it represents trust and sensitivity.  If blue is your favorite color then you form strong attachments with others, you are conservative, even tempered and reliable, which makes you an excellent parent or spouse.  If you tend toward more vibrant blues you prefer a tad more excitement and you are a bit more gregarious.  If you are choosing blue for your wedding then you are in good company.  Universally, blue is the most popular color.

Here's our something blue from last week’s weddings.  Trending in blue flowers are gorgeous delphinium, thistle and blue roses.  The roses featured here have a high petal count, large heads and are custom color enhanced to a vibrant blue.

The Language of Flowers

The Language of Flowers

We are of course thrilled if you are giving flowers just because. Sending flowers when they are least expected is a thoughtful gesture that creates a lasting memory.  Brightening someone’s day or bringing life and beauty into your home is a great way to enhance your mood. The benefits of flowers and plants are numerous. Studies have shown that fresh flowers and plants in the home create a calm and serene environment. Plants are an environmentally perfect choice.  They filter the air in your home or office and are good listeners!

If you need same day delivery for a special occasion trust our floral artists to select flowers that tell a story.  Each blossom has a meaning, some going back thousands of years.  For a romantic anniversary consider red roses.  Red roses are the universal sign of love and beauty.  In Greek mythology rose bushes were said to grow from the tears of Aphrodite as she grieved the loss of her love Adonis.

The beauty of fresh flowers evokes strong emotional responses.  Sending the right message for a specific occasion takes a combination of choosing just the right blossoms, arranged in a pleasing style, and a color palette that sets the mood. Of these three elements, color plays the major role in the response your gift will elicit. Consider the following emotions associated with color:

  • Red:  Passion, Love

  • Orange: Happiness, Energy

  • Green:  New beginnings, Nature, Abundance

  • Blue: Responsible, Sadness, Calm

  • Purple: Creativity, Royalty, Wealth

  • Black: Mystery, Elegance, Formality

Is there a design style or specific flower you prefer?   Take a look at our Artist Choice bouquets.  You can select your colors, style, size and our flower experts will create a stunning arrangement of the freshest flowers in town.  Our signature designs as well as the Artist Choice are available on our website for these special occasions:

Why Do We Give Each Other Flowers?

Have you ever wondered why we choose to give each other flowers? Well, it goes beyond merely looking pretty.  For as long as humans have been walking this earth, flowers have been the best way to share emotion.  Think about when you are happy, sad, or romantic. There are certain flowers that have historically been used to represent those feelings. During the Victorian era across Europe, it was a tradition to present your love with a bouquet as a marriage proposal. If they returned the bouquet to your right hand it meant yes, if it was returned to the left hand it meant no.

Flowers still play an important role in today’s society as emotional messaging.  It is why we continue to send flowers to mark the moments in our lives. Think of fresh flowers as a three dimensional, colorful and fragrant emoji!

As  they say in the movie You've Got Mail...."Daisies are such a friendly flower!"   If I had to pick a flower as my personality type I'd hope to be a daisy.  They have a fresh friendly nature that is cute and natural looking.  The one thing I like most about daisies is that they don't pretend to be soemthing else.  They are happy about being a daisy so they stand up strong and proud against more delicate blossoms in a bouquet.  They don't have the elegance of the rose, the complexity of a peony or the distinctive look of a tropical bird of paradise.  But they do have longevity, simplicity and beautiful shape. Everytime I design with them, it reminds me how important it is to be the best possible me I can be!  Focus on the qualities that make you friendly, strong and proud.  Aspire to be the best possible daisy you can be.
